Betamet has served heavy industry over 20 years and has gained its customers’ trust at home and abroad with its expertise and reliable operation.
In addition to paper and steel industries, the installations of mines’ process equipment, such as piping, hydraulic and pneumatic devices and automation systems are the key competence and business areas of Betamet. The efficient implementation of the projects is based on close cooperation and good communication between the customer and the other project partners. Detailed work plans and preparations made on company’s own workshops ensure schedules being also kept in large projects. Know-how, quality, flexibility, reliability, and valuing the environmental considerations have enabled long-term customer relationships.
Examples of work in the mining sector
The first major work in the mining industry was the installation of LKAB’s pellet factory in Kiruna in 2006-2008. Later on, Betamet has worked annually on one or more mines at home and abroad.
A long-standing co-operation in Outokumpu projects expanded in late 2011 to mining operations in Outokumpu Chrome Oy’s F3-project, which was a part of the process of doubling the Kemi mines concentrates production. Betamet was responsible for unpacking and installing the surface equipment of the mine. The work started in January 2012, and it was completed, on schedule, at the end of June. The partially active process provided its own challenges. The resources of machine, device and pipe installations were used flexibly at the critical points of the construction site. Up to 80 Betamet Field Engineering mechanics and up to 40 Betamet Piping mechanics were working at the mine at peak times.
At the Kevitsa mine in Sodankylä, Finland, Betamet installed three AG mills during the spring and summer 2011. The customer was FQM Kevitsa Mining Oy, which is a Finnish subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals Ltd. Installing the mills in the middle of the mining process was a demanding task, due to the heavy lifts, among others. The diameter of the mill is 9 meters, and its empty weight is approximately 600 tons.
Betamet also has one of the most comprehensive tool stocks in Finland. It also contains special tools. The necessary equipment is transferred to the sites in tool vans and containers. Each employee also has a personal toolbox.
