Bioibérica: bringing ideas to life
Bioibérica is a biotechnology company specialising in the research, development, production and sale of biomolecules for the pharmaceutical, veterinary and agrochemical industries. Since it was set up in 1975, Bioibérica has set itself a firm commitment: to help improve the health and wellbeing of people, animals and plants. After nearly 40 years, the company is a world leader in heparin, pharmaceutical specialities and active ingredients for joint health, plant stress and immunological and digestive health.
Over the years, a firm commitment to science and technology and a wide knowledge of this field have consolidated our leadership in the production of Glycosaminoglycans (Mucopolysaccharides), including, apart from Heparin, Chondroitin Sulphate, Hyaluronic Acid and Glucosamine. We are also specialists in other active ingredients such as Aminoacids, Characterised Peptides and Protein Hydrolysates. We currently have over 100 products and we are present in more than 65 countries.
One of our priorities is to improve the quality of life of the over 200 million patients in the world who suffer from osteoarthritis, joint lesions and muscular-skeletal disorders. That is why Bioibérica researches, develops, manufactures and markets chondroprotector drugs (term that means, literally: cartilage protector medicines). These are medicines with a slow symptomatic action that act directly on the three structures of the joint affected by the osteoarthritis and several studies endorse chondroprotectors for their high efficacy, safety and cost.
But Bioibérica wants to go further than pharmacological treatment and is also strongly committed to personalized medicine, i.e. to developing products that use a patient’s genetic and/or environmental information to diagnose, prevent or treat the disease. We already have the first genetic test for predicting the progression of osteoarthritis of the knee, the Arthrotest™, on the market. We are also developing a DNA test that will enable physicians to predict the risk of osteoporosis-related fractures in post-menopausal women.
Another project we are working on are biomarkers in osteoarthritis, which may help physicians arrive at an early diagnosis of osteoarthritis, detect the profile of patients with the worst prognosis, monitor the evolution of the disease and check the efficacy of a certain treatment.
Also in the area of Human Health, we have received approval from the European Commission to market Mobilee®, a functional ingredient rich in hyaluronic acid, polysaccharides and collagen that, when taken on a daily basis, help to keep joints healthy. This is the first ingredient showing benefits in preserving joint health that can be added to foods for daily consumption. In fact, Mobilee® is already marketed in Spain by Central Lechera Asturiana and Sport Life in a milk drink that helps protect the health of a sportsperson’s joints.
We also concern ourselves with animal health, for both companion and farm animals. As we are specialists in joint health and the world’s leading producer of Glycosaminoglycans, companion animals also benefit from our experience in this field. Therefore, in Bioibérica we create products to protect the joints of dogs and cats. But that’s not all, we also have products for diarrhoea, cystitis, liver disease, immunology and dermatology for companion animals.
Another example of this desire to constantly innovate, emanating from our specialisation, is Dysgen®, the first DNA chip which allows the ascertaining of the genetic predisposition of a dog, at any age, to develop hip dysplasia. This tool is a significant innovation as it simultaneously detects seven genetic markers associated with this pathology from a simple blood test. Having this information before the appearance of the first clinical signs, allows the veterinarian to take pre-emptive measures to minimise the development of the illness.
Also, in Bioibérica we produce and sell ingredients for farm and companion animal feeds, or for animals with digestive problems. They are products specifically designed to improve appetite, digestibility and intestinal health.
Plants, as people, also suffer stress and since 1986 here at Bioibérica we have been providing solutions to combat this. Stress caused by extreme weather conditions (cold, heat, drought, torrential rain, etc), salinity, pests, diseases, transplants, pesticides… All of these are factors that have a negative impact on the quality and quantity of harvests.
At Bioibérica we have great experience in managing plant stress, confirmed by top agricultural research and plant physiology centres. Starting from there, we have developed a specific range of products, based on aminoacids, which act naturally to promote plant biostimulation, nutrition and protection. We also use the fruit fly mass trapping technology, which has become a worldwide reference.
Last year we launched Crop-Scan®, a crop stress diagnostic service based on thermal and multi-spectrum imaging, which has also been developed by the R&D&i team at Bioibérica. With this new service, the state of the crop can be determined quickly and precisely, from plant to plant, allowing the supervision and optimisation of preventive strategies and corrective actions in the management of the crop. The end result is a tool that allows technicians to implement specific and efficient actions to correct a number of stress situations affecting different types of trees, thereby leading to improvements in production output and quality. Furthermore, it allows for a more sustainable use of a number of farming resources such as water, fertilizers and phytosanitary products, thus achieving true precision agriculture.
