Baden-Württemberg – where ideas work
The expanding, research-intensive healthcare sector comprising the branches of biotechnology, medical technology and
pharmaceutical industry is a core sector in the Baden-Württemberg industrial landscape. In 2014 13.8 billion euros gross value
added make an important contribution to the economic strength of our federal state: 3,5 % of the GDP comes from the industrial
healthcare sector1. Baden-Württemberg has the largest number of pharmaceutical and medical technology companies and the
second largest number of biotechnology companies in Germany.
Key Data and Facts:
Around 1.000 companies involved in research, development and/or production located in our state are working on solutions for
a healthy lifestyle, on ways to support active ageing and on individualised therapies for treating disease.
Taxable revenues and employee figures in the
healthcare industry were calculated by the
Baden-Württemberg Statistics Office on the
basis of data held in the BIOPRO company
database at the time of the survey. The data
are taken from 2013. BIOPRO’s company
database lists 153 biotechnology companies,
812 medical technology companies and 80
companies in the pharmaceutical industry,
all of which research, develop and/or produce
in Baden-Württemberg. Figures were
extracted for 129 biotechnology companies,
783 medical technology companies and all 80
* For companies that are active in several economic sectors, revenues and number of employees were taken into account on a pro rata basis, and the company was only counted once.
The entire value creation chain is represented in Baden- Württemberg from research and development to production and

Boehringer Ingelheim and Aesculap. The 3 branches of the healthcare industry – biotechnology, medical technology and pharma
– are embedded in a dense network of (university) hospitals and research institutions. In addition, numerous suppliers and
service providers from related fields benefit from cooperation with the well-positioned healthcare industry.
Today’s ideas are tomorrow’s innovations
High levels of R&D investment are key factor for innovation: in Baden-Württemberg, 4.8% of GDP was invested in R&D in 2013;
the German average was only 2.8% (over all topics). This ranks Baden-Württemberg top in R&D investment, ahead of Berlin
(3,6%) and Bavaria (3.2%). In the healthcare sector, the power for innovation is enhanced by the close cooperation between
the three healthcare industry branches. Alternatively, setting up an independent company is an excellent opportunity to turn
innovative ideas into marketable products and services. In the period from 1/2013 to 7/2015, 15 companies were founded in
