GC Rieber Shipping ASA

GC Rieber Shipping’s business within offshore/shipping includes ownership in specialized vessels, high quality ship management, project development and industrial portfolio management within the segments subsea, ice/support and seismic.

The group has a unique competence on offshore operations in harsh environments and specializes in designing and developing, offshore vessels. Through strategic investments the group has substantial knowledge and experience within subsea and marine seismic.

As of 1998, GC Rieber Shipping has been listed on the Oslo stock exchange with the majority of shares held by the GC Rieber, a privately owned company. Having made its first foray into the shipping and marine environment sector in the 1930s, followed by oil and gas ventures in the 1970s, the GC Rieber Shipping has operated as a dedicated shipping company since 1981.

GC Rieber, the majority shareholder in GC Rieber Shipping, was founded in 1879 and over four generations has evolved, both through organic growth and acquisitions, to offer long-term active ownership in core business sectors. At present, this strategy is condensed into three main areas; Industry, Shipping, and Property, each of which is headed by a dedicated subsidiary.

Although headquartered in Bergen, Norway, GC Rieber Shipping is working on a much wider basis with ships operating in Australia, Russia, Brazil, North Sea, West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, and any other prime locations for the oil and gas, and offshore sectors. Across its three sectors the company currently operates 13 advanced special purpose vessels, of which 11 are owned by the company. In addition, the company has one seismic vessel for delivery spring 2015.

Within the seismic space GC Rieber Shipping owns and operate three ships. In addition, the company has delivery of one seismic vessel first quarter 2014. This vessel will have ice-class 1A*, which enables it to navigate in and out of ice infested areas. The vessel will be equipped with the capacity to
tow 22 streamers. Seismic is the segment with the longest traditions within
the shipping business and the company have owned and operated seismic vessels since the early 1970s, accumulating vast experience from a huge number of global operations.

In the 1980s the company made a deeper move into offshore exploration and development through dynamically positioned subsea support vessels. Today GC Rieber Shipping owns and operates four subsea vessels on charter to various offshore contractors and oil companies.

The company is specializing in tonnage for harsh and icy conditions, both related to scientific expeditions and logistics operations as well as services to the oil and gas sector in the demanding Polar regions. Both vessels currently operating in these ice-prone areas have been designed in-house based on our long experience from operating in these waters. Operations range from ice management for ExxonMobil on the Sakhalin I field in Russia with the Polar Pevek, to research and logistics operations in Antarctica for the British Antarctic Survey with the Ernest Shackleton.

Ship management
As a fully integrated shipping company we have built valuable experience which our ship management clients can benefit from. Our understanding of their demanding operations, their required quality at all level and the implications of down-time are important reasons why these clients look to us for these services. We pride ourselves on taking the same ownership in what we do for our ship management clients as we do for our own vessels.
