For exposed structures like wind turbines, or other tall installations, lightning will strike!

The matter is to assess the risk of being struck, thereby to analyze how frequent lightning damages will occur, and how severe they will impact the safety and O&M costs. Global Lightning performs risk assessment on several different levels, and work close with the customer to define the risk management.

The risk of being struck is the first thing to consider, where numerical tools (FEM) along with strike density data from lightning location networks can be used to identify significant risks. Such analysis can be conducted on entire wind farms or other large installations and will identify which areas that are exposed to direct strikes of different amplitudes.

Secondly the impact from the lightning current and the associated charge erosion or magnetic fields must be evaluated. This smaller scale analysis considers the behavior of sub components as wind turbine blade receptors, sensors, and other specific installations. Here the MTBF must be aligned with the estimated exposure and the time between scheduled service intervals.

Analysis of the electrical systems within the wind turbine is used for insulation coordination, where transient analysis of the installations will define where additional protection in terms of shielding and surge protection devices is needed.

Risk analysis and risk management is a key factor to the safe and reliable operation of all mission critical installations. Many industry standards define risk assessment as a requirement, and those that don’t will in near future.

Lightning protection of wind turbines
For modern wind turbines the need of a strong lightning protection system has become mandatory.

The consequences of suffering from expensive damages or reduced lifetime on critical components have been realized during the last decades, and new requirements for proven protection performances have been defined.

Global Lightning is specialized in lightning protection of wind turbines and is able to provide complete innovative solutions that can meet the requirements from professional operators and that comply with the newest industrial standards and guidelines.

Our contribution to a wind turbine development process can be different varying from conceptual studies to detailed design and implementation. This process ensures the wind turbine developer that the lightning protection system is thought into the design from the very beginning. Lightning protection improvement is another focus area for Global Lightning, where older installations are updated to meet tomorrow’s requirements.

In general a Global Lightning concept is covering all aspects of the lightning strike starting from the lightning attachment process defining actual striking points on the wind turbines, to the specific current conduction and charge transferring through the down conduction and earthing systems.

Our solutions comprise all necessary precautions as lightning receptors and down conductors, components for direct effect protection as well as shielding, cable management and surge protection for indirect effect protection.

All our solutions are designed in compliance with IEC 61400-24 and can be certified according to GL2010 or IEC 61400-24.

All lightning protection components need to be verified to comply with the lightning test standards.

Depending on the specific requirements, full scale testing of subcomponents is most often the preferred method to gain this verification.

Global Lightning operates one of the world’s largest test facilities for direct effects testing, utilizing impulse voltages up to 2.5MV, DC voltages up to 600kV, impulse currents up to 250kA and short circuit currents of 15kA. The test engineers of Global Lightning have throughout the years used this equipment to set up a large variety of tests from small coupons to entire wind turbine blades or nacelles.

The verification typically begins with a meeting where the customer presents the product idea or design, and we can elaborate on how to visualize and verify the functionality in the laboratory. Together we can write up a test plan that describes the procedure and methodology, after which the testing itself is performed.

The customer can either participate in the test sequence, or let us do the tests and documentation. In either way we submit a test report after the test, documenting the test with waveforms, pictures, results and product specific conclusions.

The laboratory tests at Global Lightning are about to be accredited to ISO 17025.
