Hansen Protection AS is the direct continuance of Helly Hansen PRO AS. Our history dates back many years. Helly Juell Hansen founded his original “Impregnated clothing and tarpaulin factory” in Moss in 1877. Thus the foundation for the development and core business of Hansen Protection AS was laid.
Hansen Protection is a high-technology company that over the years has developed some of the most advanced survival & immersion suits available for protecting lives – at or in the sea. More than 250 000 suits have been exported to more than 20 countries throughout the world.
SeaAir -the most intelligent suit ever!
SeaAir is the first combined helicopter and offshore suit to cool in the heat and warm in the cold. Smart textiles with integrated functions provide optimal comfort in all situations. In cooperation with SINTEF we have developed SeaAir survival suit for offshore workers. The suit is designed for use as protection during helicopter transport and as a survival suit in the event of a helicopter emergency landing on water or an incident requiring personnel to evacuate offshore platforms.

The jury’s verdict:
Development of the Helly Hansen SeaAir suit represented an incredibly demanding design challenge. The success of this product, which meets the needs of a user group with extreme demands in respect of function and comfort, is partly due to thorough research. Special materials are used that absorb and store surplus body heat when the body is too warm and emit heat when the body-temperature falls.
Key focus in development has been given to ergonomics and comfort. Integrated sprayhood and an emergency beacon are examples of new functional details that help raise the chances of survival in the unlikely event of distress.
We are proud to present the new SeaWind suit which is tailored specifically for the emerging offshore windmill industry and rope access technique workers.
Main goals in the design and development process has been to meet the requirements of the demanding personnel performing the maintenance and inspection work on the offshore wind mills. In this process we have also seen that many of the same requirements are valid also for workers exposed to tough and risky environments on offshore oil installations.
In the process we have evaluated the normal work procedures in close cooperation with personnel engaged the wind farm industry and rope access technique workers. Good knowledge of the actual work situation has put us in the position to develop a construction with a balanced combination of functionality and safety.
It has been important for us that the suit should be easy to wear and thus be worn at all times as a coverall to improve efficiency and convenience for the user. Further on, the suit is optimised to be worn together with necessary safety equipment as seatand fall arrest-harnesses. In line with this direction, – we are developing an inflatable lifejacket which may be integrated with the harness without preventing normal movement patterns.
Hansen Protection put emphasis on an attractive design. However design should always be deflected from the function.
Key features built into the SeaWind suit to meet these requirements are:
- Ergonomy – pre-shaped construction with 100% freedom of movement
- Breathability – durable fabrics with highly breathable properties from GoreTex
- Lightweight – made as a shell product to reduce weight
- Ventilation – waterproof pit-zips (underarm-zips) to enhance ventilation in controlled situations
- Pockets – roomy pockets constructed with mesh to enhance the breathable properties of the fabric
- Gloves and hood in neoprene, lifting becket and pen-pocket
- For easy integration with safety equipment as harnesses and SeaLion lifejackets, the suit is “clean” on both chest and back
- The suit fulfils the requirements of the IMO/Solas LSA code, as a 1 hour immersion suit without internal buoyancy
The SeaWind suit is the first generation of new work suits from Hansen Protection and serves as a basis for the next models under development. In the pipeline we have a SeaWork model made in a heavy duty oxford/nylon with integrated hard-toe boots.
