Life Science Nord

Life Science Nord – Innovation for your health

Home to some 500 medtech, biotech and pharmaceutical companies, the northern German states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein are a magnet for biotech R&D. Life Science Nord is the brand under which the Life Science Cluster in northern Germany is organized. It comprises the medical technology and biotechnology sectors, as well as the pharmaceutical industry of the federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Life Science Nord is pulling research and industry together to enable the region to further enhance its reputation internationally.
The Life Science Nord Cluster is characterized by the openness and willingness of all stakeholders to collaborate across geographical and institutional boundaries. For this reason, the cluster has established itself as one of the leading life science networks in Europe with a unique value chain. The federal states of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein have teamed up to support the cluster at a political level and have pooled their efforts, for example, in the cluster agency Life Science Nord Management GmbH.
In addition, about 200 companies and organizations in biomedicine and related industries have organized themselves into the research and industry association Life Science Nord e.V. In cooperation with the cluster management, the association offers its members advantages by means of a partner program.
Life Science Nord is the central point of contact for Life Sciences in northern Germany. The key task is to maintain and continuously expand the network of all stakeholders and develop a team spirit. This lays the foundation for innovative projects by bringing stakeholders together to support funding. Life Science Nord provides information on technical and business trends and facilitates entry into foreign markets by organizing joint pavilions at international trade fairs or delegation trips with political support. It also offers a job portal to assist companies to find qualified employees.

The Life science Nord Cluster consists of 500 medtech, biotech and pharmaceutical companies and includes:

  • 1 strong industry association
  • 2 university hospitals
  • 9 universities and colleges
  • 12 recognized research institutes (important facilities of German research organizations: Max Planck Institute, Leibniz and Helmholtz Community, Fraunhofer Institute)
  • 13 innovation centers

Biotechnology and pharma
Biotechnology in the Life Science Nord region is characterized by a broad corporate base and a workforce of 8,200. The core competencies are in drug research, molecular diagnostics and enabling technologies.
Pharmaceuticals are inextricably linked to life sciences. Significant drug manufacturers and large trading companies have a presence in the region. Some of the major international pharmaceutical companies maintain research and production facilities: AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Medac, and the Ferring Group develop and sell innovative, biopharmaceutical products.

Drug research
The technical developments and knowledge gained in the 1990s have spawned new biotechnology businesses in Life Science Nord. Numerous experts in interdisciplinary teams are researching into new therapeutic approaches. In early drug development, the focus is on development platforms, while biotech companies research into and develop chemical or biological substances in the key indications such as neurodegenerative diseases (Evotec), inflammatory diseases (CONARIS and Proteo Biotech) and oncology (Provecs Medical).

Enabling technologies and diagnostics
Besides development platforms for therapeutics, Life Science Nord has numerous firms, global player as well as small and medium-sized, that sell analytical and diagnostic products and services in the global market. For example, Eppendorf AG exploits its high level of competence in laboratory instruments for special diagnostic applications. Indivumed creates a bridge between therapy, diagnostics, and technology platforms in the field of oncology with its tissue bank on various tumor entities.
