Oulu Mining School
The Oulu Mining School (est. 2007) is the University of Oulu’s education and research network in the field of mining and minerals. As a network that spans several faculties and research institutes, it has provided basic education for geologists and Masters of Science in Technology specializing in mining and minerals as well as further education for people working in the mining industry. As part of the Finnish Mining Cluster, the Oulu Mining School is also actively participating in the development of mining and mineral research.
Now, University of Oulu is strengthening the concept of the Oulu Mining School – and widening it’s areas of expertise. The aim is to cover the whole value chain from ore to concentrates including ore exploration, mining technology and mineral processing and form a comprehensive unit of expertise.
At the same time OMS is given the status of a faculty and it will be developed to be internationally recognized educator and researcher in the mining and mineral field.
THE NEW FACULTY – OULU MINING SCHOOL
The new Faculty aims at internationally recognized center of excellence in mining. It runs multidisciplinary cooperation in the mining context areas together with the different faculties in the University of Oulu as well as with other Universities. With the new Oulu Mining School the University of Oulu meets the needs of the economic life and society by producing the most accurate expertize needed in the field.
The Faculty focuses on research and education in the following areas: geosciences, mining technology and mineral processing. The close interaction between the different research areas enables the full optimization of the concentration process from exploration to the production.
The fields of education and research are: geochemistry, geology and mineralogy, surficial geology, geophysics, mining technology and mineral processing technology. The faculty has a close co-operational link to the several context areas as for example environmental technology, process chemistry, process control & modelling as well as to the societal impact of mining.
