EVAPCO Air Solutions a/s has delivered fan coils for the offshore industry for the past 15 years. The products delivered are condensers, evaporators, heating and cooling coils fitted with fans. The choice of materials for offshore installations are vital for the equipment’s longevity. Maritime environments are one of the reasons for short lifetime when inappropriate materials are used. When corrosion begins, the fins exhibit reduced heat transfer and thus a lower efficiency of the coil.
The Heat Exchangers tubes in addition to being resistant to maritime atmosphere, must also be resistant to the medium inside the tubes. For condensers, evaporators and heating coils it is sufficient using pre-tinned copper or CuNi alloys. For seawater cooling coils however, it has been problematic finding materials. Previously, CuNi alloys were recommended by experts, then SMO took over as the best material. We have trailed materials in a salt spray chamber and concluded that Titanium is the most resistant material.
